Industrial Solar installs Organic Rankine Cycle Turbine in Qatar

Today Industrial Solar started the installation of a solar thermally driven Organic Rankine Cycle Turbine in Doha, Qatar. The showcase project is an upgrade for a Fresnel Collector built in 2013 at the Qatar Foundation Science and Technology Park.

Already in 2013 Industrial Solar installed a Fresnel collector string for the solar test facilities of the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI) with the purpose of conducting doctorate level research on heat generation through solar Fresnel concentrators as well as different operational strategies for charging and discharging of heat storage vessels.

Industrial Solar's Fresnel collector is a linear concentrating solar thermal collector which is optimized for industrial applications and which can provide temperatures up to 400 °C in the single-digit and lower double-digit Megawatt range.

The ORC, manufactured by the French company ENOGIA, uses the advantages of higher molecular mass of organic compounds over water to achieve higher efficiencies, slower rotation speed and lower pressures in medium to low temperature ranges. The solar driven ORC power generation system at QEERI will be the topic of many more research projects on power generation in the small power ranges.

Today Industrial Solar is responsible for the engineering, installation and integration of the ORC (Organic Rankine Cycle) turbine – including hydraulic, electrical and controls – into the existing Fresnel collector system.

The installation team is supported with great hospitality by Dr. Ashraf Sadik Hassan and his team at QEERI from Hamad Bin Khalifa University and the expertise and workforce of the local subcontractor Energy & Industrial Solutions WLL. The contract has a volume of 140.000 €.
